Green Lipped Mussel for Senior Dogs and Cats: Gentle, Natural Support for Aching Joints
What I saw in practice was a lot of chronic pain, inflammation; dogs & cats ending up with poor mobility which is very much preventable in many cases. Owners diligently seeking pain relief for their pets when the symptoms began to frequent them daily. What I didn't see in practice was the use of earlier preventative medicine, something so important, to look after those joints when they are healthy and maintain that health going forward.
I found a lack of options and offerings in the clinics that I worked in. I had seen, from my time working overseas as a vet in New Zealand, the real life before and after effects that Green Lipped Mussel (GLM) could have and I wanted to bring this home to offer to my patients. I went looking and found quite a bit, but then I looked into what I found and realised that the majority of market offerings don't specify the quality of GLM that they are offering and this makes all the difference. So I sourced the best of the best, it took me 6 months to find a supplier, within those 6 months I received so many samples of GLM and the differences in quality were remarkable. I paid a lot more for quality because there is no point cutting corners with natural care. What is green lipped mussel?
Perna canaliculus is a shellfish native to the pristine waters of New Zealand. It has been valued for generations, and it's a rich source of omega-3 fatty acids, glycosaminoglycans (the building blocks of cartilage and joint fluid), amino acids, vitamins and minerals.
What makes GLM unusual is a rare omega-3 called eicosatetraenoic acid (ETA), which is found in very few other natural sources.
How it works: the COX connection
Joint pain and inflammation are driven by enzymes, including cyclooxygenase (COX), which produce inflammatory compounds called prostaglandins. This is the same pathway targeted by non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as meloxicam.
Research suggests that ETA and the other omega-3s in GLM help modulate this same inflammatory cascade, and may also influence the lipoxygenase (LOX) pathway, which produces further inflammatory mediators. In simple terms, GLM works on some of the same pathways as NSAIDs, but in a gentler, more nutritional way.
That distinction matters for our senior pets. NSAIDs can be very valuable, but long-term use needs monitoring, particularly for kidneys, liver and gut, all of which are more vulnerable in older animals. Cats in particular have limited safe NSAID options. GLM offers supportive, long-term joint nutrition that can sit alongside veterinary care, and in milder cases may help reduce the need for stronger medication. Never stop or change prescribed medication without speaking to your vet.
What the research shows
Most of the evidence is in dogs, and it's encouraging:
- Bierer & Bui (2002, Journal of Nutrition): Dogs with arthritis fed GLM showed measurable improvements in joint pain and stiffness.
- Pollard et al. (2006, New Zealand Veterinary Journal): A GLM extract was well tolerated in dogs with degenerative joint disease and was associated with improved pain and mobility scores.
- Rialland et al. (2013, Canadian Journal of Veterinary Research): In a controlled trial, dogs with clinical osteoarthritis fed a GLM-enriched diet showed improvements in pain behaviours and mobility over 60 days.
- For cats, a diet containing GLM and omega-3s has been shown to improve activity levels in cats with degenerative joint disease (Lascelles et al., 2010).
Why "full fat" and "non-heat treated" matter
Not all Green Lipped Mussel is equal, most available out there won't tell you that.
Full fat: The beneficial omega-3s, including ETA, are found in the mussel's natural lipid fraction. Some powders are defatted, which strips out the very compounds we're relying on. Full fat GLM keeps the whole-food matrix intact.
Non-heat treated: Omega-3 fatty acids are delicate. High heat processing can degrade and oxidise them, reducing potency. Gently processed, non-heat treated GLM protects both the fats and the natural joint-supporting compounds.
When choosing a GLM supplement, check the label. If it's not on there, it's likely because it is heat treated and defatted.

Benefits build over time. I usually advise giving it consistently for four to six weeks before judging the effect.
A few sensible notes
GLM is a shellfish, so avoid it if your pet has a known shellfish allergy. Introduce it gradually.
The bottom line
Ageing pets deserve to move comfortably. Full fat, non-heat treated green lipped mussel is a well-researched, gentle way to support joint health from the inside, working on the same inflammatory pathways as conventional anti-inflammatories.
